It uses a continuously fed wire electrode and flux, which is a blanket of fusible, granular material. Flux is commonly made up of lime, silica, manganese oxide or other compounds. Flux acts as a shield for the arc and the molten material, preventing sparks as well as suppressing UV light and welding fumes. This makes subarc welding a safe and efficient form of welding. The benefits of subarc welding are many. The welder can achieve deep weld penetration and create especially sound welds. There is very little weld spatter and weld distortion is greatly reduced.
